Pattern Source

I based this block on Elly Sienkiewicz's Grapevine Wreath in Best of Baltimore Beauties, Volume 1.

Block Title

Familiaris Consortio is a Papal letter written by Pope John Paul II. After God, my family is my greatest love, and I wanted to create a block to honor them.

This Leg of the Journey – Completed May 2006

I love the silhouettes that appear in many of Elly's blocks, and that is what prompted me to create this block. I needed to find a suitable "frame" for the silhouettes, and I selected Grapevine Wreath, not only because it allows for the three silhouettes, but also because the image of the grapevine appears throughout the Gospels. The Gospel reading at our wedding was from John 15, which says, "I am the vine. You are the branches . . ." This block will probably be the center of the quilt.

The quotation on the block has a special meaning to me:

The future of the world
and of the Church
passes through the family.

Lesson Learned

Sometimes life gets in the way! I had hoped to complete several blocks during Lent, but I didn't. My workload was such that I just didn't have the time to devote to quilting, but I did take my appliqué box with me wherever I went and sewed all of those teeny grapes!
