Block 18 – Mathematics

Pattern Source

This is an original block that I designed with a considerable amount of input from Teddy.

Block Title

Teddy is highly gifted in mathematics. He has won numerous state and national awards since he was in elementary school. This block contains a quote from Galileo Galilei which we first heard in the Disney cartoon, Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land: "Mathematics is the language with which God has written the universe."

The figure represents the mathematical concept of "phi." It is similar to the Fibonacci Sequence, and is Teddy's favorite mathematical concept. It is also called "the Golden Ratio." (Yes, the nautilus is formed, by the hand of God, following the concept of phi.)

The block also contains the Greek letter phi in the border at the bottom.

If you want to learn more about the mathematical concept of phi, here's the article on Wikipedia.

This Leg of the Journey – Completed January 2008

I struggled with the design of this block. I had all sorts of ideas for what I wanted to include. Finally I had a brilliant idea to simply include the quote and the golden ratio figure contained within a border. Teddy approved!

Lesson Learned

Don't be afraid to include subject matter entirely foreign to the traditional Baltimore Album Quilt. Make the quilt your own!
