Block 6 – Shrovetide

Pattern Source

This block is Pattern #37, Asymmetrical Spray of Red Blossoms, from Elly Sienkiewicz's book, Baltimore Album Quilts, Historic Notes and Antique Patterns.

Block Title

I made this block during Shrovetide, the week before Lent begins. I finished it on Ash Wednesday.

This Leg of the Journey – Completed March 2006

This block was very attractive to me, and I can't say exactly why. The color combination is so pure and simple, as is the shape. Maybe I found it refreshing after just completing two much more complex blocks.

Lent is my favorite time of year. I find it particularly cleansing, physically, mentally, and spiritually. I always give up television for Lent, so I am hoping that my block-making is more prolific during the next several weeks!

Lesson Learned

It's very important to keep vines or stems as uniform in width as possible! Also, the iron is VERY HOT! (Ironing those teeny flower centers after gathering them was a painful experience!)
