The Red Queen's Game

“I declare it’s marked out just like a large chess-board!” Alice said at last. “There ought to be some men moving about somewhere—and so there are! she added in a tone of delight, and her heart began to beat quick with excitement as she went on. “It’s a great huge game of chess that’s being played—all over the world—if this is the world at all, you know. Oh, what fun it is! How I wish I was one of them! I wouldn’t mind being a Pawn, if only I might join—though of course I should like to be a Queen, best.”

This only works with Java enabled browsers. To play, click with your mouse on the piece you want to move, and then click on the square where you want to move it. As soon as you make your move, the Red Queen will make her move (keep your eyes open—she moves fast!). If you click on a piece and change your mind, click on it again to deselect it.

To go back one move, right-click your mouse. (Click it several times to reset the board.)

It's a great huge game of chess

You can play a chess game against the Red Queen! You will play the white pieces, and you will move first. You must know how chess pieces move in order to play, because the computer will not let you place a piece where it shouldn't go. (You will simply be unable to move the piece to the invalid square.)

You can make standard chess moves, including moving the Pawns two spaces on their first moves, and also Castling. You can also be Queened!

The Red Queen will tell you when you are in check, and so forth.

Good luck!
